There's a big difference between getting an explanation and actually understanding something.
I've noticed that whenever I ask ChatGPT something with just "explain this," the answer can be technically correct but still leave me thinking, "Okay... but I still don't really get it."
The problem usually isn't the information.
It's the delivery.
A beginner doesn't need the same explanation as someone who's already familiar with the subject. Sometimes you need an analogy. Sometimes you need an example. Sometimes you need to be challenged with questions instead of being given another wall of text.
That's why I've started being much more specific about how I want ChatGPT to teach me, not just what I want it to explain.
So today, I've put together seven prompts that do exactly that.
Whether you're learning a new skill, studying for something, or trying to finally understand a topic you've been stuck on, these should make the whole process feel a lot more natural.

1. The Adaptive Tutor
Prompt:
"Act as my personal tutor for [TOPIC]. Your job is to help me genuinely understand the subject, not simply give me information.
My current level: [BEGINNER / INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED]
My goal: [GOAL]
What I already know: [WHAT I KNOW]
Preferred learning style: [EXAMPLES / ANALOGIES / PRACTICAL / STEP-BY-STEP / MIXED]
First, ask me 3–5 questions to identify my current understanding and knowledge gaps. Then build the explanation around what I actually need to learn. Start with the simplest useful mental model, gradually introduce complexity, and connect every new concept to something I already understand. After each major concept, ask me a short question that tests whether I understood it before continuing. Correct misunderstandings immediately and adapt the difficulty based on my answers."
Why it works:
It turns learning into an interactive process instead of giving you the same generic explanation regardless of your experience level.
2. Explain It Three Ways
Prompt:
"Explain [TOPIC] using three different levels of depth. First, give me a simple explanation that someone with no background knowledge could understand. Second, explain it at an intermediate level using practical examples and the most important technical details. Third, give me an expert-level explanation that covers the underlying mechanisms, nuances, and important exceptions.
After all three explanations, compare them and identify the 3–5 ideas that remain important at every level. Then give me one real-world example that connects the simple explanation to the expert-level concept."
Why it works:
Seeing the same concept through different levels helps you build a stronger mental model instead of memorizing a surface-level definition.
3. Find My Knowledge Gaps
Prompt:
"Act as a diagnostic tutor for [TOPIC]. Don't immediately explain the subject to me. First, determine what I understand and where my knowledge breaks down.
My current level: [LEVEL]
My goal: [GOAL]
Start by asking me 7 targeted questions that progressively test foundational knowledge, connections between concepts, and practical understanding. After I answer, identify exactly what I understand, what I partially understand, and what I'm missing. Then create a prioritized learning sequence that focuses only on the gaps preventing me from reaching my goal. Teach each gap using an explanation, example, and short test before moving forward."
Why it works:
It prevents you from wasting time relearning things you already know and focuses your attention on the gaps that actually hold you back.
4. Make It Click
Prompt:
"I want to understand [TOPIC], but the usual explanations aren't making it click. Act as an expert teacher and find a better way to explain it.
What confuses me: [CONFUSION]
What I already understand: [KNOWN CONCEPT]
My experience level: [LEVEL]
First, identify the likely reason I'm struggling with this concept. Then explain it using an intuitive mental model and connect it to something I already understand. Use one concrete example and one counterexample to show where the mental model works and where it breaks down. Avoid unnecessary jargon, but introduce technical terminology when it improves precision. Finish by asking me 3 questions that reveal whether I genuinely understand it."
Why it works:
It doesn't just simplify the topic. It diagnoses why the explanation isn't working and builds the explanation around that specific obstacle.
5. Learn Through Socratic Questions
Prompt:
"Teach me [TOPIC] using the Socratic method. Do not simply give me the answers.
My current level: [LEVEL]
My goal: [GOAL]
Start by presenting the first concept or problem I need to understand. Ask me a question that requires me to reason about it. Wait for my answer, evaluate my reasoning, and then ask the next question based on what I got right or wrong. If I'm stuck, give me the smallest hint necessary rather than revealing the answer immediately. Gradually increase the difficulty and connect each question to the larger concept. At the end, summarize the reasoning path we followed and identify any misconceptions I should revisit."
Why it works:
Being forced to retrieve and reason through an idea makes the learning process much more active than simply reading another explanation.
6. Turn Any Topic Into a Learning System
Prompt:
"Act as an expert learning designer. Build me a personalized learning system for [TOPIC] that takes me from my current level to [GOAL].
Current level: [LEVEL]
Time available: [TIME PER DAY / WEEK]
Deadline: [DEADLINE]
What I already know: [KNOWLEDGE]
Start by identifying the essential concepts I need to master and arrange them in the correct learning order. For each stage, give me the core concept, a simple explanation, a practical example, one exercise, and a short recall test. Prioritize concepts based on how important they are to understanding everything that follows. At the end of each stage, identify what I should be able to explain or do before moving forward."
Why it works:
It turns a huge subject into a structured progression, so you always know what to learn next instead of jumping randomly between topics.
7. Stress-Test My Understanding
Prompt:
"Act as a rigorous teacher and test whether I actually understand [TOPIC] rather than simply recognize the information.
My current level: [LEVEL]
Concepts I've studied: [CONCEPTS]
Start by giving me a series of increasingly difficult questions that test recall, application, reasoning, and the ability to explain concepts in my own words. Do not give me the answers immediately. After each response, evaluate my reasoning, identify any hidden misconceptions, and ask a follow-up question when necessary. Include at least one unfamiliar scenario that requires me to apply the concepts rather than repeat something I've memorized. At the end, give me a detailed assessment of my strongest areas, weakest areas, and exactly what I should review next."
Why it works:
It exposes the difference between recognizing an explanation and actually being able to use the knowledge independently.
That's it for today.
Hopefully these give you a few new ways to learn with ChatGPT instead of just asking it questions.
